Thats about what I did the other day when I got a call from my GI nurse, whom I love btw. She's an amazing advocate and has listened to me cry and talk about GI stuff....i.e. she is a saint. Anyshways, she called to tell me that my pathology on my celiac testing has come out negative. Blood work and tissue biopsys from my EGD. Which I will tell you about in a minute. So the good news is that whatever is causing my issues probably isn't a genetic disorder or autoimmune disease, but definitely a severe gluten allergy and intollerance based on my symptoms. The bad news is that we still don't know what it is but whatever is going on is causing me to be very anemic and have some vitamin deficiencies. So we are still on the look out for any causes. Since we started testing my doctor wants to follow through until we find an answer and I love him for that. So our next step is to do a "capsule endoscopy". It's where you swallow a big "pill" that has a camera in it and it takes pictures of your GI tract from start to finish. There are multiple feet of an adult's intestinal tract and an endoscope that they use for the EGD and colonscopy can only go a few feet of that in either direction so the capsule camera will record the rest of it that has not been scoped and see if I have some pinpoint bleeding or what is going on. sigh....
So about the EGD. It's the scope I had done to collect 8-12 tissue biopsys of my stomach and small intestine to check for damage that celiac disease would have caused. (they came back showing moderate chronic gastritis or infection of the stomach). I went in and got checked in and put on the monitor and then they TRIED to start my IV. I have never been a hard stick before, my veins don't stick out of my skin but they are blue under neath ( because I am so pale probably). Easily visible. They stuck once, hit it and the vein blew, stuck twice and the fluids wouldn't run even though it flushed fine, got a new nurse, stuck again, missed, got the charge nurse, missed and then finally hit it on the 5th time. OUCH!!! those suckers hurt! They blamed it on our new IV catheters we have in the hospital and I will admit I hate them too but GEEZE!!! so they they made me gargle numbing solution which was weird because my tongue got heavy and I felt like I had to gag and throw up like I was swallowing my tongue, the super nice nurse assured me I wouldn't and put oxygen on me and then I heard "goodnight Lauren". I was out cold but apparently not for long, I woke up in the middle of the procedure and had to be given 4 times the doseages of meds to knock me out. I should have warned them it takes alot of anything to work on me. and then I slept the entire rest of the day. fun.
So we are scheduling me for the next endoscopy with the pill camera and then maybe we will know more. Thats all I got for now. Over and out.
