Anyshways I know you are bored already but bear with me because sister needs to brag here alright.
There was a conference yesterday at (the hospital I work at) University of Kansas Hospital called magnetizing KC. It was an 8 hour day for all nurses to attend to learn about magnet and if their hospital is not magnet certified how to become that way and how to advance their practices in general.
I was asked by my nursing educator to submit an abstract based on a project and poster presentation I had done for my new graduate nurse program. The abstract was accepted by the hospital and I was asked to present a bigger poster presentation at this conference and stand by it and answer questions and raise awareness.
My presentation was on Kangaroo Care, which is the skin-to-skin holding that we promote in the NICU and full term nursery to help babies grow and get big and healthy. So here I am!!!!
My poster was HUGE 4x6 feet. I wrote the whole thing and the marketing department put it together.
lookin like a big ole nerd answering questions from a nurse from Children's mercy
Love this pic
it works great for big babies and teeny tinys too
and super sick ones.
and healthy full term ones :)
So there you have it folks. When you have babes of your own.
Do kangaroo care (and here are some reasons why since I'm on my soap box anyway)
What benefits does kangaroo care have for the baby?- It keeps the infant’s heart rate stable at an appropriate rate and reduces bradycardic or tachycardic episodes.
- Keeps respiratory rate stable with decreased episodes of apnea and periodic breathing
- Keeps oxygen levels within normal range 85% or higher
- Reduces the need for increased oxygen
- Decreases amount of time the infant is intubated
- Decreases cyanotic occurances
- Improves muscle tone
- Improves smooth muscle movement
- Relaxes infant
- Improves the infant’s calm awake state which helps with PO feeding
- Improves non-nutritive sucking and decreases oral loss
- Improves neurological behavior development such as autonomic motor , state, attention/interaction and self-regulation dimensions.
- Hospital stays are significantly shorter
- Higher daily weight gain
- Fewer nosocomial infections including sepsis and pneumonias
- Improves growth index of head circumference
- Decreases pain scores significantly
- Improves breastfeeding
- Improves gut motility and significantly reduces NEC
- Naturally REGULATES TEMPERATURE!
- Kangaroo Care releases Oxytocin (“The cuddle hormone”)
- Oxytocin is an endorphin that relieves pain and creates a close bond between people.
- It also contracts the uterus
- Stimulates mother’s nipples to prepare for breastfeeding
- Stimulates let down reflex to produce breast milk
- Maintains production of milk and increases time they will pump or breastfeed the infant by 2.
- Helps ability to mediate emotional experiences in close relationships (for mom, dad and baby), therefore reducing incidences of PPD or “baby blues” and helps the parents feel more helpful in healing their infant in a situation they otherwise cannot control.
- Improves parental bonding with mom and dad
- Enhances parent’s confidence and competence
- Allows parents to learn baby’s cues and cries, scents, smells, voices ect
- Decreases maternal stress, and fatigue because oxytocin induces a sleepy state in both mom dad and baby, often they nap together and wake up feeling refreshed.
- Increases parent’s readiness at discharge
- Decreases incidence of readmittance to the hospital after discharge.
